Briefs: The Second Coming

Briefs: The Second Coming

All male. All Vaudeville. All trash.

The Brief boys are back from their sparkled sneaker globe trot around the world to open their new show Briefs: The Second Coming in the Brisbane Powerhouse. With more mischief and madness than last time, the show infuses burlesque, circus, vaudeville, dance, comedy and gender bending acts – all drenched in oil, glitter, and plenty of cheek.

Self described as a “f@#king hot mess of a show”, the execution in essence can be forgiven as being a little scrappy in places as the aim here is not high-brow art but a rollicking good time splashing about in the gutter (or a bird bath if you’re Mark Winmill). Having said that, the circus acts are world class, and the hot bodies are top shelf – the view is worth the ticket alone!

Speaking of which, the boys traditionally give away a good ol’ Aussie meat tray as their raffle prize. If I had known what the prize was this time, I would have just handed over my wallet.

Joining the two original cast members, Mark ‘Captain Kidd’ Winmill (2011 King of Burlesque crowned in Las Vegas), and creative producer and performer Fez Faanan, are a new line up of burlesque brats including drag artist Dallas Dellaforce, Ben Lewis, Tom Flanagan and Louis Biggs.

There were more highlights in this show than Barbie’s hair, but special mention goes to the sexy nerd boy Lewis; what he could do with a yo-yo was quite impressive, as was Winmill’s hoola-hoops. The dog show, the cheer leading and the glow-in-the-dark’s were also great concepts. The gorgeous costume designs by Nathalie Ryner and Dellaforce were so patriotically dazzling, it was like Priscilla meets the national costume for the Olympics.

And of course the epic soundtrack by DJ Busty Beatz. I’m not a soundtracky kind of gal but if you had the CD available on the night, I would have bought it … just sayin’.

Sexy, outrageous, irreverent, Briefs: the Second Coming lives up to its reputation for being a ‘f@#king hot mess of a show’.

After Brisbane, the boys will have a short stint in Melbourne from 31 May – 1 June, and then will head off on tour to the UK and Europe for a three month tour. For more information and tour dates, visit their website: www.briefsboys.com
