Adelaide Cabaret Festival – Storm Large: Crazy Enough

Late shows in the Space Theatre seem to be a crazy, whacky collection of shows where audiences should be prepared for anything.  But no one would have been prepared for the in-your-face, frenetic energy of Storm Large.

Storm LargeLate shows in the Space Theatre seem to be a crazy, whacky collection of shows where audiences should be prepared for anything. But no one would have been prepared for the in-your-face, frenetic energy of Storm Large.
This busty, blonde, amazon woman with a huge voice and an even bigger attitude is the complete opposite of what the wine-sipping set at the Cabaret Festival would expect. She’s shocking and bawdy… and she is a slap-you-across-the-face, drink-a-bottle-of-jack awesome performer!
Loosely based on the idea that her mother was crazy, Storm Large has done everything she can to remain a square peg and buck the system to prove that she herself isn’t crazy… the audience soon gathers though that this woman is nuts and embraces her eccentricities with all her might.  Certainly a story for the 18+ audience, a central theme of using sex as a weapon is graphic but enthralling.  You can’t help feel a little like you should be in some darkened room with men in anoraks listening to her story.
Vocally, Storm Large is a powerhouse.  Her songs are high energy and have a huge impact. A real highlight was her reinterpretation of ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’ as a psycho stalker (putting headliner Olivia Newton John to shame) and her signature anthem ‘8 Miles Wide’.
With a massive following in the US, this show was a welcome wake-up call for Adelaide audiences and hopefully will add to her followers down under… physically and musically!
