In Sydney, the week kicked off with the Sydney Theatre Awards – awards given by a panel of professional theatre critics (disclaimer: I’m one of them) – held, as always, in Paddington, in an auditorium packed with theatre makers, actors, techies, publicists, and more. People were standing, the tables were crowded, and the vibe was so positive, full of love for the industry and the art of theatre. Here’s the list of winners.
Australian theatre was top of mind throughout the performances on the night, and nowhere can it be seen more clearly than in the Awards’ opening number: a Nick Enright medley.
Nick Enright is a crucial figure in Australian musical theatre history. As you listen to the medley, performed by cast members of the current Australian tour of The Sound of Music, listen out for his lyrics: evocative, simple illustrations that touch on a moment, a feeling, an identity.
