The three works will be presented as ‘concert staged’ presentations, bringing both Herman’s scores and the play scripts to life in the captivating performance space of Melbourne Recital Centre.

“A Sondheim Triptych was only intended as a one-off, to celebrate the 80th birthday of Stephen Sondheim” says Aaron Joyner, Magnormos Founder and Artistic Director.
“However it was so successful and well received that we quickly started thinking about other writers that we could honour. As one of the most successful composer/lyricist to have written for the musical theatre stage, and being so different in style to Sondheim, Jerry Herman is the perfect writer for our 2011 triptych, and I am especially delighted to present these three musicals.”
Monday 4th July: The first show in the series: Milk and Honey, Herman’s first fully-fledged Broadway musical, will give Melbourne audiences a chance to see how Jerry Herman’s career began with this wonderfully evocative and romantic score.
Monday 11th July: Dear World, in a newly revised format is a powerful chamber musical that contains some of Herman’s best stand-alone songs.
Monday 18th July: The season concludes with one of the world’s favourite musical Hello, Dolly!, covering the full range of Jerry Herman’s outstanding career.
Magnormos, a Melbourne-based independent theatre company, is celebrated nationally with its unique and ground-breaking commitment to the advancement of Australian musical theatre. Established in 2002, Magnormos’ frst production was an original Australianised adaption of Stephen Schwartz’s Working. The most recent successes was the Melbourne premiere of the Australian musical The Hatpinand the Australian premiere of the Broadway hit [title of show] which enjoyed two successful seasons in 2010. Other Magnormos initiatives include the Ozmade Musicals concerts and the Musical Theatre Trivia Nights.
American composer and lyricist Jerry Herman is well-known for his work in Broadway musical theatre having composed the scores for the hit musicals Hello, Dolly!, Mame and La Cage aux Folles. A fve time Tony Award-nominee, winning on two occasions, Herman received the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
