Will A Chorus Line Outsell them all?

Rehearsals for the new Australian production of A Chorus Line are set to begin this week with director Baayork Lee flying into Melbourne today.

Starring Debora Krizak as Sheila, Josh Horner as Zack and Anita Louise Combe as Cassie, A Chorus Line will have its first performance on New Year’s Eve 2011 at Adelaide’s Festival Theatre (playing a limited 4 week season) before transferring to Melbourne in March 2012.

Ticket sales are strong in both Adelaide and Melbourne, and a tour is currently being considered, Producer Tim Lawson told AussieTheatre.com this morning.

“We certainly have invitations to take the show to other cities in Australia and Asia, which I’m considering, whilst monitoring the current climate at home” Lawson said.  In what has turned out to be a savvy business move, Lawson’s decision to plan for short seasons in Adelaide and Melbourne has piqued the interest of theatre goers, with advance sales figures looking very promising.

“There is no doubt that the support from Adelaide and Melbourne is even greater than our expectations”, said Tim Lawson.

With other shows closing early (Rock Of Ages in Brisbane) and shortening seasons (Love Never Dies has announced a 12 week run in Sydney after an initial 20 week season was planned), it seems that A Chorus Line’s staying power might surprise us all, judging by the current support and excitement surrounding the production.
