The countdown is on! In just 100 short days, the 10th Anniversary tour of Wicked will set itself down in Melbourne, where its Australian journey began.
The show will commence previews on Wednesday 7th May, with its opening night scheduled for Saturday 10th May at the Regent Theatre – current home of King Kong, which will close on February 16th in anticipation of a Broadway opening in December.
Wicked‘s composer, Stephen Schwartz, recently watched the Australian cast perform in New Zealand. He described them as “the best since the original Broadway cast” – and Australian audiences seem to agree, embracing this show with surprising vigour.
Lucy Durack and Jemma Rix will reprise their roles as Glinda and Elphaba respectively. Steve Danielson, in his first musical theatre leading role, will play roguish Fiyero. Maggie Kirkpatrick returns as Madame Morrible, and Glen Hogstrom will play Doctor Dillamond. Emily Cascarino, a newcomer, will play Nessarose, and Legally Blonde‘s Edward Grey will play munchkin boy Boq.
Wicked became a runaway success after its Broadway debut 10 years ago. There are currently nine productions of the show staged around the world, including in New York, Tokyo, Seoul, and Mexico City. There are two US national tours, a UK tour, and our own Australian production, which has left Auckland and is now playing Manila.
