WAAPA’s Back Stage Courses Now Accepting Applications

WAAPA_logoHave you ever dreamed of stage managing a famous Australian musical theatre star or working on Broadway? Or how about designing sets, costumes or lighting for the latest Australian musical?

Well here is your chance to aim for your dreams. The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts applications for Production and Design courses close soon – so you’d better hurry and submit yourself for the chance to work with some of the best teachers Australia has to offer!

Production & Design at WAAPA offers dedicated courses in Costume, Design, Lighting, Props and Scenery, Sound and Stage Management. Courses are all 3 years, full time at ECU’s Mount Lawley campus. Students complete a Diploma in their first year, an Advanced Diploma in their second year and in their third and final year they will transition into a Bachelor of Performing Arts degree. Students accepted into these prestigious courses have the opportunity to study in a vibrant, exciting and stimulating, “hands-on” environment, producing over 30 shows a year from opera to musicals, to theatre, to massive free events and concerts.

“Graduates from the ‘backstage’ courses at WAAPA are in high demand, working across the globe in theatre, film, television, festivals and major events” said WAAPA Director, Professor Julie Warn.

Students are given the opportunity to specialise in their discipline just as they would in the industry. All students are afforded the opportunity to work with the WA Screen Academy students on short films, as well as the acting and music theatre students’ showreels. Lighting and Sound students work in the theatres as board operators and gain experience working  with directors and choreographers on developing the lighting states and sound beds for entire shows.

The three year Arts Management course culminates in the opportunity to travel interstate or overseas to complete a 10 week secondment and many students are lucky enough to take on permanent positions with their secondment companies.

Participating companies have included Opera Australia, Sydney Theatre Company, Flickerfest Sydney, Austin Texas Film Festival, San Francisco Municipal Ballet, The Esplanade Singapore, Lincoln Centre NY, Druid Theatre Ireland and The Gordon Frost Organisation.
