Yo, I’ll tell you what I want, what I really really want…
For better or for worse, Baby, Scary, Posh, Ginger and Sporty were a huge part of generation Y’s formative years, and now their legacy will live on in the form of a West End musical.
Oh, yes. That’s right. A Spice Girls MUSICAL.
It was announced just hours ago in London that Viva Forever, produced by Judy Craymer, will open West End’s Piccadilly Theatre on December 11 (previews from 27 November), just in time for Christmas.
Featuring a jukebox of songs from one of the most successful female pop groups in history and a book by Jennifer Saunders of Ab Fab fame, this “contemporary comedy musical about family, friendship”, will tell the story of a beautiful, talented girl and her best friends who get swept up in the obsession of today’s TV celebrity culture.
Producer Judy Craymer (producer of global musical phenomenon MAMMA MIA!) stresses that this musical is not an homage to the 1990s pop sensation, but is thankful for the Fab Five’s support for the show.
“I’m so thrilled the Spice Girls themselves have shown me so much encouragement and support,” Craymer said.
“This is not a tribute show but the positivity, energy, humour, excitement and friendships that encapsulated the Spice Girls and their songs have inspired the whole creative team, and infuse Viva Forever.”
The show will be directed by Paul Garrington (Mamma Mia!) and orchestrated/arranged by Martin Koch (Musical supervisor for London Olympic/Paralympic Opening and Closing ceremonies).
