Victorian Opera’s Calling All Rockers

Victorian Opera is calling all rockers ahead of auditions for its 2020 production The Who’s Tommy.

Based on The Who’s legendary 1969 concept album Tommy, which sold over 20 million copies, the five-time Tony Award-winning musical is set to supercharge Melbourne’s Palais Theatre from 14 – 21 August.

Auditions for lead and ensemble parts will take place in Melbourne on 2 – 3 December and in Sydney on 6 – 7 December ahead of rehearsals beginning in July 2020. Vocal prowess is a must for The Who’s Tommy where classic British rock meets music theatre. Interested performers can download a casting brief via Victorian Opera’s website, though candidates must be quick to apply with submissions closing on Friday 25 October.

With music and lyrics by The Who’s guitarist and vocalist Pete Townshend, the electrifying and timeless score features smash hits such as ‘Pinball Wizard’, ‘I’m Free’ and ‘Acid Queen’.

Acclaimed director Roger Hodgman (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder) is at the helm alongside musical director Laura Tipoki (School of Rock), choreographer Dana Jolly (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), set designer Christina Smith (The Boy from Oz), costume designer Isaac Lummis (State Schools Spectacular), and lighting designer Matt Scott (Anything Goes).

Tickets for this production, and all other productions in Victorian Opera’s Season 2020 are now on sale.
