There are nearly 80 shows performing at 19 different venue in the Sydney Fringe this year, and I’m absolutely certain there will be something for everyone.

Erin James’ Picks
The title sold me on this one. I am a Lady. I am a Nerd. If there is anyone else out there who wholly embraces their inner nerd as much as I do, then see this show… and then tell me all about it! (email me erin@aussietheatre.com – seriously, I want to hear all about it)
Piano bar meets Sega Megadrive in Keira Daley’s cheeky cabaret tribute to some of history’s greatest minds – from Marie Curie to Ada Lovelace via that woman who invented Liquid Paper. Indulge your inner (or not-so-inner) nerd with amazing true stories, intriguing characters, and inventive arrangements of songs – some old, some new, all in the key of nerd. With piano nerd/ninja Mark Chamberlain.
This is set to be a wonderful production, starring Ed Gray and Naomi Livingston (both WAAPA grads, and both working in the professional theatre industry), choreographed by Stephanie Grigg (Love Never Dies) and directed by Benjamin Giraud (Mary Poppins), this musical by Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family) and Tom Greenwald is a must see.
From the moment John comes into the world his big sister Jen vows to protect him. Living with an abusive father and an impassive mother, John and Jen find love and family in each other. As they grow into adults they drift apart and John goes off to war, leaving Jen with no-one to hold on to.
Matt Edward’s Pick
A darkly satirical look at the machinations and manipulations of two office workers who will risk everything to climb the corporate ladder. The Lost Rung employ their trademark brand of highly physical, acrobatic theatre to create this energetic, poignant and sometimes violent work.

The Day the Sky Turned Black is a one women show following five characters through the events surrounding that day. Based on interviews with survivors, journalists and a global arson expert, the play travels from before the fires through the events of the day to the inevitable returning home and starting to rebuild. In this extraordinarily simple and curiously beautiful work, Ali Kennedy Scott switches between the narratives of five fictional people caught up in a real-life disaster. Every one of the stories is breathtakingly compelling; every one of them brings a fresh perspective…
This show has enjoyed huge success in New York at the NY Fringe Festival, and is certainly one to see at our very own Sydney Fringe Festival 2011.
