The Herald Sun reported this morning that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the musical based on the children’s books by Ian Fleming will be coming to Australia:

FAMED musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is coming to Australia for the first time.

Melbourne producer Tim Lawson said an all-Australian version of the stage show, based on the hit ’60s film, would premiere late next year before touring.

“I don’t know where it’s going to be starting, but it’s definitely coming,” Lawson said.

Tim Lawson has since confirmed with AussieTheatre.com that the show is indeed headed down under. He also confirmed that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will be produced by his company TML Enterprises.

Lawson’s company has produced many shows in Australia including Topol in Fiddler on The Roof, Buddy, Shout! and Le Grande Cirque, but had been focussing on off-shore projects of late. (TML produced of the recent Asian tour of Jekyll and Hyde, starring Lucy Maunder and Belinda Wollaston).

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is the second confirmed show to be produced by TML Enterprises in as many weeks. Lawson confirmed with AussieTheatre.com last week that he will produce A Chorus Line later this year:

“I am thrilled to be involved with A Chorus Line, and introducing it to a new generation!”, he said.

It is evident that this WAAPA Musical Theatre graduate turned producer is keen to bring new and innovative shows to Australia in what has been described as the ‘new golden era’ for Music Theatre.

Auditions for A Chorus Line are currently taking place ahead of a December 31 opening in Adelaide. No audition notice has been posted for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as yet.

Show Information:

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang the musical features a book by Jeremy Sams, with music and lyrics by Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman, the pair who were responsible for the music in the original motion picture. They penned 6 new songs for the stage production, which also features a host of music from the original film including the Academy Award nominated title song, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

The show originally opened in London in 2002 where it was nominated for 2 Olivier Awards. It ran for over three and a half years and took more than £70 million.

It opened on Broadway in 2005, closing that year after lacklustre box office performance. It was however rewarded critically with 5 Tony Award Nominations.
