Tim Minchin will head back to Broadway in 2017 with Groundhog Day

His celebrated success Matilda the Musical is still running on The West End and on Broadway, and it will finally open in Australia at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre later this year, but our Tim Minchin is already gearing up to return to Broadway, Groundhog Day style.

In The New York Times it was reported that the new musical, based on the 1993 film starring Bill Murray, will:

Have a book by Danny Rubin, who wrote the [Groundhog Day film’s] screenplay with Harold Ramis, and will feature music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, choreography by Peter Darling, and set and costume design by Rob Howell. Matthew Warchus will direct.

Messrs. Warchus, Minchin, Darling and Howell all worked on “Matilda,” which won four Tony Awards and a special honor for the girls playing the title role. “Matilda” has been playing on Broadway since 2013.

“Groundhog Day,” which will be produced by Whistle Pig Productions, Scott Rudin and Columbia Live Stage, hasn’t announced a Broadway theater, but does have an opening date: March 9, 2017.

Congratulations, Tim Minchin! In the meantime, let’s all get excited for Matilda’s Australian premiere. Check out the first cast announcement, follow the show on Twitter, and check out this video below, which is a brilliant example of Minchin’s flair for music and lyrics.
