This Little Girl: Barking Gecko’s latest play opens in Subiaco

Barking Gecko Theatre Company is Western Australia’s leading professional theatre company for young people, creating live shows for children for the last 21 years.

Their latest show is a modern day fairy tale epic about the search for happiness, self and a place to call home.

Written by Finegan Kruckemeyer and directed by Noel Jordan, This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing opened yesterday at the Subiaco Arts Centre.

Jordan calls this piece a contemporary fable suitable for the entire family. Harnessing the best elements of storytelling, the show brings young audiences a sense of adventure and fun.

“The challenge for us as theatre makers in the rehearsal room is how to turn the incredible imagination of Kruckemeyer into live action. This has been thrilling to discover how through the use of simple kitchen implements we can conjure up a wealth of locations, characters and drama”, he said.

Penned by Australian playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer, the piece places children in situations where they are asked to rise to a challenge and in doing so, confront their fears. Jordan believes that the joy of the text translates well to the stage, and keeps audiences guessing.

“His interest in the identity of children as their own hero’s is compelling”, he said of Kruckemeyer’s work.

“Combined with language that is poetic and lyrical the resulting text is a joy to read off the page and a fun challenge to stage. From battlefields, mobile wagon bakeries, dark forests to underwater lighthouse submarines the scenarios are never predicable.”

This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing will play at the Subiaco Arts Centre until 21 July before commencing a WA School’s Tour (Monday 30 July – Friday 10 August) and  a NSW Tour (Monday 17 – Saturday 29 September).
