Third Millar/Rutherford musical to premiere

The Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) will present the latest musical from James Millar and Peter Rutherford.

The Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) will present the latest musical from James Millar [pictured] and Peter Rutherford.

After their successes with The Hatpin and their hilarious and touching look at modern romance, Love Bites, WAAPA invited Millar and Rutherford to create a brand new piece for its Music Theatre 2nd Year students.

A Little Touch of Chaos is a comedy that follows the stories of Tom, a young agoraphobic sketch artist who has to leave the safety of his house to attend a family wedding in 2010; and Arthur, a God-fearing youth living in a sect in 1975, who has a taste of forbidden fruit from the outside world.

Through paralleled experiences in two different time frames, Tom and and Arthur go on simultaneous journeys of romance, awakening and realisation.

A Little Touch of Chaos spans decades and desires, love and loss, running away and coming home… and shines a light on the true value of family.

“It is an honour to have been asked back to WAAPA to not only co-write but also direct a new piece of Australian musical theatre,” said Millar.

A Little Touch of Chaos is, to me, about families old and families new, the liberation found in choosing life paths individually.

“It is about panic and its relationship to seclusion (both forced and chosen), about the relationship between a father and a son, a husband and a wife, a mother and a daughter, lovers and friends and the way patterns and answers can be found in the chaos of all of these narratives crossing paths.”

The show opens on October 9 at the Subiaco Arts Centre. Bookings: www.bocsticketing.com.au.
