They’re Playing Our Song, a classic Broadway musical penned by Neil Simon (Sweet Charity) with music by the legendary Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorus Line) and lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager (That’s What Friends Are For), first premiered in Australia in 1980 at the Theatre Royal.
33 years later, the show about two unlikely lovers has found its way back to the Royal for a strictly limited engagement and for a serious case of art imitating life – performed by real-life couple Danielle Barnes (The Boy from Oz) and Scott Irwin (Hairspray).
Based on the real-life relationship of Hamlisch and Bayer Sager, They’re Playing Our Song follows composer Vernon Gresch, who meets lyricist Sonia Walsk at his luxury Manhattan apartment. This is the beginning of a whirlwind professional and romantic relationship for these two very different personalities. When it comes to making music, they are a match made in heaven. But is this relationship doomed, or will love strike the right note?
They’re Playing Our Song will play for Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th May only. For tickets, visit ticketmaster.com.au. For more information, visit http://hitproductions.com.au/Song2013.htm.
