Theatre Walk to honour legends

NSW Premier Kristina Keneally today unveiled Sydney’s first major Theatre Walk in honour of our stage and screen legends.

NSW Premier Kristina Keneally today unveiled Sydney’s first major Theatre Walk in honour of our stage and screen legends.

A series of 21 bronze plaques have been set into Pier 2/3 at Walsh Bay as a tribute tothe leading lights of Australian theatre.

Ms Keneally was joined at the opening of the Theatre Walk by many of the stars featured in the walk including Geoffrey Rush, Neil Armfield, John Bell, Barry Otto, Jacki Weaver and the Minister for the Arts, Virginia Judge.

“This landmark promenade is a permanent reminder of the immense contribution that our famous stage actors, producers, directors and designers have made to our national identity,” Ms Keneally said.

“Each one of these 21 theatre icons has helped build Australia’s international reputation as acreative powerhouse.

“We are honouring some of the world’s best stage performers from theatre doyens Googie Withers and Robyn Nevin, to contemporary commanders of the stage such as Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Jacki Weaver and Geoffrey Rush.

“The achievements of local theatre identities John Bell, Barry Otto, Neil Armfield, Wendy Blacklock, Gale Edwards, Reg Livermore, Jim Sharman and Brian Thomson are now enshrined in bronze for all to see.”
