AussieTheatre.com went behind the scenes at Magnormos with Gemma-Ashley Kaplan and Shaun Kingma to talk about the Melbourne Premiere of The Hatpin.
The Melbourne premiere season of The Hatpin, directed by Shaun Kingma and produced by Magnormos opens tonight at Theatre Works, St Kilda.
First produced in Sydney in 2008 starring Caroline O’Connor and Barry Crocker, The Hatpin also played to rave reviews at the New York Musical Theatre Festival later that same year. In the Melbourne premiere season, Gemma-Ashley Kaplan, who played the role of Clara Makin in The Hatpin in Sydney and New York, joins the Magnormos production in the lead role of Amber Murray. Samantha Morley (The Boy from Oz, Billy Elliot, Cats, South Pacific) plays the sassy Harriet Piper whilst one of Australia’s most loved television and theatrical performers Philip Gould is Charles Makin and Sophie Collins (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Cats, Cabaret) plays his seemingly cheerful yet sinister wife, Agatha Makin.
