Sydney Fringe Launched

The Sydney Fringe, a multidiscipline cultural event set within the theatres, galleries, clubs and public spaces of the inner west, and showcasing the independence and irreverence of Sydney’s creative community, today announced the opening of the submission process for the 2010 festival.

Opening Friday September 10, 2010, the Sydney Fringe will take run for 17 days throughout the Inner West, and will include the art spaces in St Peters and May Street, the underground performance venues in Petersham, music venues in King Street and Enmore Road, theatre venues in Erskineville and Redfern and many other spaces, large and small, across the precinct.

From January 29, artists will be able to visit thesydneyfringe.com.au and submit their project.  Disciplines include theatre, comedy, dance, musical theatre and cabaret, physical and visual theatre, music, visual and digital arts, literary, film, craft, food, family and special events. Submissions will remain open until April 1, 2010.

“There will be a lot of opportunities across a range of disciplines, so we want to create a submission process that artists will find easy to manage,” said Kris Stewart, director of the Sydney Fringe.

“We really just want to know what excites them in the project and why they want to get it before an audience.”

The Sydney Fringe has been founded by the Newtown Entertainment Precinct Association (NEPA), an alliance of Inner West arts and cultural venues including Carriageworks, the Seymour Centre, the Enmore Theatre and many other theatre and music venues. The Sydney Fringe is supported by the City of Sydney and the City of Marrickville.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to create an exciting new event in Newtown, one that matches the energy of the artists who live and work here, and which has an open door to their contributions,” said Greg Khoury, chair of NEPA and The Sydney Fringe.

“Newtown has always been the home for Sydney’s independent culture, where artists from all over come to work and live, and we want the Fringe to continue that great legacy.”
