Sydney Dance Company Pre-Professional Year 2024

Sydney Dance Company is thrilled to announce the new cohort of aspiring dancers selected to take part in the celebrated Pre-Professional Year program for 2024.

Established by Head of Training Linda Gamblin, the Pre-Professional Year (PPY) program has been at the forefront of contemporary dance training for over a decade, fostering inquisitive minds and sophisticated movement. The program has trained over 250 students since its inception, with 60 aspiring professional dancers from across Australia and New Zealand enrolled in 2024.

Training as an ensemble at Sydney Dance Company’s iconic Walsh Bay studios, PPY students work with over 40 choreographers, teachers and company affiliates each year, gaining exposure to a diverse range of practices and movement philosophies from across the world.

A unique force in contemporary dance training, the impact of PPY resonates globally. Training alongside an internationally renowned professional ensemble, graduates are equipped with a profound sense of personal agency and the ability to collaborate seamlessly with established industry professionals.

Recognised nationally and internationally for the quality of its graduates, PPY provides the most compre hensive contemporary dance training in Australia with world-class staff and state- of-the-art perfor mance and teaching facilities on Sydney Harbour.

PPY alumni have worked with over 40 companies around the world, including Ballet National de Marseille, Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, Opera Ballet Vlaanderan, Göteborg Opera, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Chunky Move, Force Majeure, Stephanie Lake Company as well as with Sydney Dance Company’s professional ensemble.

Designed with psychological and physiological considerations integrated in all aspects of the program, PPY cultivates a safe environment for learning, experimentation, and self-discovery. By challenging industry norms and pushing artistic boundaries, PPY students are poised to shape the ever-changing landscape of contemporary dance.

Sydney Dance Company’s PPY students complete a CUA51520 Diploma of Dance (Elite Performance) in their first year of training which is built upon in the second-year cohort that offers  Advanced Diploma of Professional Dance (Elite Performance). Sydney Dance Company is a registered training organisation .
