Step In Time! Stage School Australia brings MARY POPPINS JR to Melbourne

The beloved musical tale will take flight in a high-energy stage spectacular when the Young Australian Broadway Chorus (YABC) presents Mary Poppins Jr in Melbourne, for the first time this July.

A division of Stage School Australia, the YABC has assembled an epic cast of 90 talented young  performers to bring to life the classic celebration of imagination, adventure and belief in the impossible.

The high-energy, large-scale production features all the songs audiences know and love, from the frenetic Super califragilistic expialidocious to the fun A Spoonful of Sugar and the fabulous Step in Time.

This dazzling junior adaptation of Mary Poppins was written by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey), based on the classic books by P.L. Travers, and showcases the wealth of young musical theatre talent from across Melbourne.

One such talent is Alyssa Jandayan, 18, an aspiring young performer and first-year Bachelor of Psychology student cast in the titular role of Mary Poppins.

A student with Stage School Australia for seven years, this marks Alyssa’s debut as leading lady in a YABC production, after performing in the ensemble of the YABC’s 2023 junior adaptation of Oliver!.

She describes the iconic character as her dream role, having grown up reading the books and watching the seminal 1964 film starring Julie Andrews.

Alyssa recalls:

When I was 11 and really starting to read vigorously, I was given a Mary Poppins book that contained all six original stories in the franchise.

I think I’ve read that book around three times now and thoroughly enjoy each story. I genuinely can’t wait to work with everyone, cast and crew alike, because I love meeting new people and making new friends.

Mary Poppins Jr is the latest high-quality, full-scale family-friendly production from the YABC and Stage
School Australia, and follows the successful seasons of Seussical the Musical, Shrek Jr, Oliver! Jr and
Spring Awakening.

Mary Poppins Jr. will run for a strictly limited season at the Cripps Centre in St Kilda East from Wednesday 16 to Saturday 19 July, and it promises to be an affordable and entertaining school holiday outing for kids of all ages.

Producer Corey Smark :

An extensive casting process saw over 300 talented local performers aged 10 to 19 given their chance to star in the fully costumed and professionally staged production.

Developing Young People Through the Performin`s for Over 40 Years.

Mary Poppins Jr continues YABC’s proud tradition of providing incredible performance opportunities for the stars of tomorrow. This is a magical and uplifting show, and audiences will be blown away by how beautifully this talented young cast brings a classic and much-loved story to life.
