Shakespeare makes a splash

This year, under a canopy of stars, beside the picturesque beauty of Balmoral Beach, director David MacSwan presents his 24th production of the acclaimed Shakespeare by the Sea. 

Formed in 1987, the company has produced over 20 of the Bard’s masterpieces, and this year presents The Taming Of The Shrew along side John Fletcher’s “sequel”, The Tamer Tamed on alternate nights.

A cast of 12 actors perform both plays in repertory style, just as Shakespeare’s acting company would have done more than 400 years ago.

“The aim of the company is to present Shakespeare’s work as he intended it; accessibly, entertainingly and with the respect it deserves but the irreverence it can afford” says MacSwan.

“There is also a chance to see some of the brightest new talent on the theatrical scene, mixing with some of the most experienced.”

Newcomer Jennifer Williams (pictured), an ACA (Actor’s Centre Australia) graduate of 2009, has stepped into a leading role in The Tamer Tamed and is reveling in the opportunity.

“It’s been really interesting putting on a play that most people haven’t seen or even heard of. My character (Maria) is quite a strong character with some fabulous speeches about equality and respect. In some ways, the themes in The Tamer Tamed are quite modern – more so than the Taming of the Shrew”.

As for performing in the open air, Williams feels that when the weather is right, the mood is perfect.

“It’s so spectacular being outside! When the moon is reflected in the calm harbour water, it is absolutely stunning! Why do this inside when there are so many beautiful places in Sydney like Balmoral to produce theatre?”

And if the weather is bad?

“Generally we are there rain hail or shine! With the cockatoos and the parrots and the bats and the weather – nothing is going to phase me in a theatre again!”
