After a sold out 2020 premiere and extended run, Darlinghurst Theatre Company (DTC) and Green Door Theatre Company (GDTC) are thrilled to announce the return of seven methods of killing kylie jenner by Jasmine Lee-Jones in 2022.

Green Door Theatre Company (GDTC) is a Sydney based, independent company specialising in provocative new work. It places artists, and social impact at the centre of the producing process. GDTC is a company that values artistic time and contribution above all else and believes in the power of theatre to shift perception and behaviour. The directors and cast is also supported by production team of women of colour, bringing together a vibrant talent pool of actors, writers, directors and designers

This blisteringly powerful play explores cultural appropriation, queerness and friendship is embarking on an east coast tour in 2022, travelling to Parramatta’s Riverside Theatre (6-9 January), Darlinghurst Theatre’s Eternity Playhouse (12 Jan – 20 Feb) as a part of the Sydney Festival program, Brisbane’s La Boite (24 Feb – 13 Mar) and Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre (27 Jul – Aug).

seven methods of killing kylie jenner dives deep into the dark waters of colourism and the commodification of Black women when tensions rise between two friends as they argue about the success of the titular influencer as a supposed “self-made billionaire”.

Director Shari Sebbens said

Jasmine’s script is one of the most incredible debut pieces of theatre to hit the colony. It takes great work and theatre magic to put a play on the road not even a minute after it closed but such is the gift that is Seven Methods of Killing Kylie Jenner.  You simply cannot miss out on the artistry, truth and magic this play is bringing to your city. Believe the hype!

“It’s really important to me that theatre feels like something that is accessible for everyone and that means making bold and conscious choices about the plays we program and the culture around it. Seven Methods is a riot of a script, a political debate, a place to heal, a party. I am unbelievably proud to be making work like this and no doubt – we are very ready to vibe with you!” said Actress and Musician Zindzi Okenyo.

seven methods of killing kylie jenner is co-directed by recently appointed Sydney Theatre Company Resident Director and proud Bardi, Jabirr Jabirr woman Shari Sebbens (Top End Wedding, The Sapphires) and television and theatre actress and musician Zindzi Okenyo (Wakefield, STC’s Grand Horizons). The play stars inter-disciplinary artist, TEDx Speaker and the founder of FOLK Magazine Moreblessing Maturure (Afro Sistahs, Seachange).

Actress Moreblessing Maturure said

This play- the cultural reset it was for many, holds a very special place in all our hearts. I’m beyond excited to be able to reenter that world and share it with new and returning audiences. Audiences have BEEN ready, our out-of-this-world team is on standby, and it’s just exciting that the industry has come to the party. I look forward to this work being one of many.

Combining theatre with gifs, memes and emojis, the play explores stereotypes of Black womanhood, white capitalist exploitation, and the politics of social media activism.

The play not only created an impact with audiences but the theatre also developed a community engagement strategy to reach new audiences and foster new relationships with the community. Audiences could join the seven methods world in person and digitally via the most entertaining Instagram account (probably) ever, or the various conversations with the team, audience and community members hosted about and around the show. Moreover, an opportunity was offered to four community members to join the rehearsal room as resident observers. The company and theatre also introduced Pay It Forward, an initiative that allowed audiences to add a donation each time they purchased a ticket online, which funded more Pay What You Can ticket for each show.

Upon the play’s UK debut in 2019, it was nominated for a prestigious Olivier Award, and first-time playwright Jasmine Lee-Jones was awarded the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Most Promising Playwright.
