Rejoicify: Wicked returns to Australia, celebrating 10 years

CONFIRMED: The internationally acclaimed blockbuster musical WICKED is returning to Australia.

Ten years ago this October, Stephen Schwartz’s thrillifying musical Wicked hit the Gershwin Theatre stage on Broadway, to help celebrate the show’s 10th birthday, the show is heading back to Australasia.

A New Zealand season has been confirmed to commence in September 2013 and Australian audiences can expect to see the show back on Aussie soil from May 2014!

Wicked ran for more than three years in Australia (2008-2011), premiering at the Regent Theatre Melbourne and touring to Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Cumulatively, Wicked‘s international productions have grossed over US$2.9 billion and been seen by nearly 36 million people worldwide.

1 in every 20 Australians saw WICKED during its three year tour of Australia, so it is completely understandable that the show is heading back for a second run.

When the Australian tour closed in Perth in September 2011, Wicked Australia’s co-producer John Frost told AussieTheatre that Elphaba, Glinda and the the wonderful world of WICKED hadn’t farewelled Australia ‘For Good’.True to his word, Frost is thrilled to be bringing the show back to Melbourne’s Regent Theatre, where fans of first fell in love with the show in 2008.

Wicked will also be flying across the country in a return Australian tour after the Melbourne season.

It is understood that auditions for the new production are taking place in Melbourne and Sydney this month.
