Prominent performers join Mums 4 Refugees with a strong message: #LetThemStay

“There’s a saying that when you become a mother, you become a mother to all children.”

Prominent performers, who all happen to be mothers, have come together with the group Mums 4 Refugees to release a cover of John Farnham’s ‘Age of Reason’, and the response has been overwhelming.

The women join millions of Australians who are calling on the Turnbull Government to stop the deportation to Nauru of 267 asylum seekers, including babies and children, and in less then 24 hours, the campaign has been discussed on national television (The Project), shared on social media with the film clip clocking more than 30K views on Facebook.

Mums 4 Refugees is a national community of mums with over 2000 working group members and over 12000 followers online who come together to advocate for refugees. Music Theatre Performer, Law Graduate and Mums 4 Refugees convener Amelia Christo says the group is about starting conversations in our communities to better support people seeking asylum, providing advocacy to refugees in our community and living in Australian and offshore detention centres and asking our politicians to do better.

“Any mother, or father, grandparent or caring Australian can’t help but see the faces of these children facing deportation and think of their own kids”, she said.

“These amazing performers have come together to sing this classic Australian song to call on our politicians to apply some reason and compassion to the debate around people seeking asylum in Australia.”

Soloists involved in the project include:
Missy Higgins – Musician and singer
Nadine Garner – of the ABCs Doctor Blake Murder Mysteries
Verity Hunt Ballard – Two-time Helpmann award winner for her roles in Mary Poppins and Sweet Charity
Gorgi Coghlan – Presenter from Network 10s The Project and The Circle
Heidi Arena – TV, theatre and comedy performer
Silvie Paladino – Musical theatre performer (Australia and West End) and recording artist
Amanda Harrison – Helpmann Award Winner for We Will Rock You and Australia’s first Elphaba
Ajak Kwai: Recording artist, ambassador for the Melbourne Festival and refugee from South Sudan

Many talented mums from the Australian music theatre community make up the choir in the video. They have had starring roles in Mamma Mia, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Moonshadow, The Sound of Music and Les Miserables to name a few.

If you feel passionately about this issue, please help spread the good work that these incredible women are doing. #LetThemStay
