Priscilla Wins Tony Award

Priscilla Queen of the Desert has won a TONY AWARD for Best Costume Design in a Musical.

Best Costume Design of a Musical has been awarded Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner for their fabulous costumes, seen onstage in Sydney back in 2006!

Tim Chappel, born in outback New South Wales, Australia, attended Sydney College of the Arts to study fashion and textile design for a Bachelor of Arts degree. His first job as a costume designer was for the feature film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Lizzy Gardiner, also born in a small outback town in Australia, went on to live in Italy where she studied fashion and costume design for three years at the Acadamia di Italiana.

The pair also won Best Costume Design at the 2010 Olivier Awards in London, and for their costume designs for both the film and stage production of Priscilla they have also won an Australian Film Industry Award (AFI), British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award (BAFTA), an Academy of Film Arts and Sciences of America Award (Oscar), Helpmann Award for Costume Design and the 2008 Green Room Award for Best Costume.

A tweet from the Tony Awards official twitter account has said that “All the costumes in “Priscilla” are machine washable… (maybe not all the head dresses)”!

AussieTheatre.com congratulates our fellow Australians for this amazing award!
