The smash hit Australian production of Mary Poppins has taken out eight Helpmann Awards in an unsurprising sweep of this year’s event.

It won the coveted Best Musical gong, whilst Verity Hunt Ballard won Best Female Actor in a Musical and Matt Lee took home the Best Male Actor in a Musical gong.

“What an incredible time for women in the arts in this country,” Hunt Ballard said.

“I am truly honoured.”

Mary Poppins also won Best Direction, Best Musical Direction, Best Supporting Male Actor in a Musical and Best Choreography.

It is one of the most incredible sweeps of the major musical awards in Helpmann history.

Mary Poppins Executive Producer, John Robertson, said it was a fabulous honour.

“Mary Poppins started its life towards the stage nearly 20 years ago and I’m told and I really believe this Australian production is the best so far, and it’s number six,” he said.

“We would like to congratulate particularly the company of performers and the children from Sydney and Melbourne who have performed in it so far.”
