Going West: Perth’s unprecedented 2016 musical lineup

Perth Musical Theatre fans, it might be time to get that second job!

With recent announcements of shows confirmed for Perth in 2016, and those still rumored, it’s looking like a busy time of bump in and outs at Perth Theatres.

Check out the confirmed musical blockbusters set to hit the West Coast.

The Lion King

The Lion King

Perth has waited a long time for Disney to produce this one in Perth and finally it has arrived. The Lion King has quickly become the hottest and hippest ticket to have. Get your ticket now, but you’ll have to look for dates in February to secure tickets to this one. The Lion King plays until February 2016.

Cats

Really Useful Group and Lunchbox Productions will bring the new London Palladium production of CATS to Perth in April 2016. The newly reworked production now features an 8 piece live band, various changes to some musical numbers (including a street-wise, rapping Rum Tum Tugger and a new tap routine for Jennyanydots). While Delta Goodrem is performing the role of Grizabella on the East Coast, we will have to wait and see who is cast as the ‘Glamour Cat’ for the Perth season.

Ghost

The West End and Broadway hit musical Ghost is heading to Perth in May 2016. Starring Rob Mills in the role of Sam and Jemma Rix as Molly (made famous in the classic film by Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore) and international star Wendy Mae Brown in the role made famous by Whoopi Goldburg.

We Will Rock You

We Will Rock You

Eleven years since it first played at the Burswood Theatre, (now the Crown Theatre) We will Rock You will return to Perth in November 2016. We Will Rock You features the hit tunes from Queen and a book by Ben Elton. Keep an eye on AussieTheatre for casting announcements.

Singin’ in the Rain

Another musical to make a return season to Perth. Last here in 2005, the current tour stars Adam Garcia, Jack Chambers and Gretel Scarlett. Based on the popular 1952 film, the production will see 12,000 litres of recycled water help the cast sing in the rain – literally – every night. Singin’ in the Rain bumps into Perth’s Crown Theatre in December 2016.

Clinton – The Musical

Following on from a sell out season on Broadway Clinton – The Musical will have it’s Australian premier as part of the Black Swan Theatre Company 2016 season. Written by by Brisbane brothers Paul and Michael Hodge it’s bound to take an irreverent take on cigars and stained dresses!

Clinton the Musical will enjoy a season at the Heath Ledger Theatre, Perth Theatre Centre from the 27 August – 11 September 2016.

AND, with Tim Minchin promising in a Perth paper, that he “would eat my shorts” if Matilda didn’t make it to Perth, the west coast is in for an unprecedented line up of musicals in 2016!
