Opera Australia presents a sizzling pair of premieres

A young couple begin a dangerous, passionate affair. In their world, a Jew cannot love a Christian. The punishment is death. When it all comes out, Rachel faces two impossible choices. Internationally acclaimed director Olivier Py has updated Halévy’s tragedy to 1930s France adding to the drama, providing an extra layer of historical context to the secrets and impossible choices, forgiveness, and sacrifice.

Sopranos Natalie Aroyan and Esther Song sing the parts of Rachel and Princess Eudoxie respectively, while bass,David Parkin plays Cardinal Brogni. Tenor Shanul Sharma will sing Leopold as Diego Torre will soar through the tremendously difficult tenor part of Eléazar.

When two royal rivals clash over not only their respective claims on the English throne but also feud over a mutual lover, the consequences are fatal. Opera Australia will present its first ever performance of Donizetti’s masterpiece Maria Stuarda a bel canto opera centred on a dispute between two soprano divas; Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth I.

Making her Australian debut, Russian star soprano Olga Peretyatko will join the ranks of La Superba Montserrat Caballé and La Stupenda Joan Sutherland in the leading role of Maria. Offering contrasting darker tones, Romanian mezzo-soprano Carmen Topciu will make her role debut as Mary’s steel-hearted cousin Elisabetta.
