Opening Night: Fulton Musical whipped into shape

Amy Lehpamer will star as Margaret Fulton

Opening tonight in Melbourne is Margaret Fulton: Queen of the Dessert – a brand new Australian musical based on the life of national treasure Margaret Fulton.

Presented by Present Tense and Theatre Works and starring Amy Lehpamer, Fulton has been five years in the making by writers Doug MacLeod (head writer and producer of The Comedy Company and Fast Forward) and Yuri Worontschak (composer of everything from Fast Forward to Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell).

With an on-stage kitchen and live cooking during the show, Fulton is not your average musical  – and that is precisely why it's so exciting. New Australian musicals are few and far between, and often suffer from lack of community support, but producer Sean Bryan is confident that the show's appeal will be great, and that

this 'true Australian musical' will capture the hearts (and stomachs) of many Aussies.

“I'm absolutely thrilled for opening night tonight, it's been a long road to get to this point” he told AussieTheatre this morning.

“Developing a new, Australian musical isn't easy, but I'm surrounded by a team of incredibly talented people, and we've had such wonderful support from the community to get us here.”

Margaret Fulton herself, who is recognised as the woman who changed they way Australian's eat, is to attend the performance.

“I'm so excited to share this piece, which we all love so dearly, with audiences, and with Margaret herself. It's going to be a truly special night”, said Bryan.

Margaret Fulton: Queen of the Dessert will play at Theatre Works, St Kilda until 1 December 2012.
