Noni Hazlehurst to deliver unforgettable performance at HOTA

A remarkable drama and award-winning, one-woman show written for renowned Australian actress Noni Hazlehurst is coming to HOTA, Home of the Arts this February 27 to 29.

Noni Hazlehurst – one of Australia’s favourite film, television and theatre stars – shines on the stage in Mother, delivering what is reported to be the performance of a lifetime.

Directed and produced by Matt Scholten and written with Daniel Keene’s characteristic lyricism and black humour, Mother tells the story of ‘Christie’, a homeless woman in a world detached, unforgiving and ultimately destructive.

Wrought with tenderness, violence and loneliness in equal measure, this production won the 2015 Drama Victoria Award for Best Production, was nominated for a Helpmann Award for Best Regional Touring Production and was also a finalist in the 2016 Australian Performing Arts Centre Association’s (APACA) Drover Awards for Tour of the Year.

HOTA CEO, Criena Gehrke, said the production gives audiences a story of one woman’s experience of homelessness in Australia, speaking to themes of isolation, loneliness and loss in a story that is both darkly comic and deeply moving.

“We’re committed to bringing the very best artists to our stages, and Mother is incredibly powerful, award-winning storytelling in the hands of one of Australia’s finest and most loved actors,” said Criena.

“There’s nowhere to hide in a one-woman show, for either the actor or the audience, and this kind of theatre really delivers an emotional punch.”

Having received rave reviews, winning the 2019 Matilda Award for Best Female Actor in a Leading Role and a nomination for a Helpmann Award as Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Play for her performance in Mother, Noni disappears into her role and delivers a performance that is harrowing, heartbreaking and unforgettable theatre.

HOTA is also hosting a special sold-out High Tea with Noni Hazlehurst event following the first show on February 27, where guests can enjoy a live Q&A interview with the renowned Australian actress while enjoying sparkling wine and indulging in delicious treats.

‘Scholten directs with great sensitivity, never letting the play slide into sentimentality. With an unforgettable performance by Hazlehurst, it’s harrowing, heartbreaking theatre.’ – The Sunday Telegraph

‘Essential theatre. Keene wrote Mother for as a vehicle for Hazlehurst and under Matt Scholten’s direction, it takes just seconds for her to disappear into her role. She measures every sentence, every word perfectly and delivers an hour-or-so of pitiless storytelling flawlessly.’ – Audrey Journal

Mother will be performed in the HOTA Theatre from Thursday 27th to Saturday 29th February.
