NOCTURNA by Ian Sinclair

Perth’s most exciting performance makers Ian Sinclair from Pony Express (Ecosexual Bathhouse, Abolish The Olympics)and Melissa Cantwell from The Kabuki Drop have come together again to create a deeply poetic and provocative theatrical experience. From the team who brought you acclaimed Perth Festival sensation Whale Fall, Nocturnawill play 24-28 August at Subiaco Arts Centre.

Nocturna combines Cantwell’s beautiful, naturalistic direction with the complex stories and characters so familiar in Sinclair’s body of work. This cat-nip narrative brings together a host of local talent including Dan Buckle, Isaac Diamond, Alicia Osyka, Morgan Owen and Ali Van Reeken as Molly the cat.

Nocturnais an unrelenting exploration of generations: Mid-20’s characters face sky-high rents, career instability and social anxiety; a mid-40’s character searches the literal terrain of the past, revealing social shifts across a cruel and surreal history.

Told through a series of intertwining monologues of a cat in search of her significant other across space and time, with the awkward adventures of four housemates as they strive for domestic bliss,Nocturnais cleverly layered, revealing a darkly comic reflection of our world as the story begins to fold in on itself.

The core creative team are joined by some of Australia’s finest theatre artists including one of Australia’s most talented, multi-award-winning designers, Bruce McKinven who has created a simple yet striking set, and award-winning Lighting Designer Matt Marshall, who both bring many years of experience and a unique creative perspective to the production.

Sound Designer and Composer Rebecca Riggs-Bennett and Choreographer Emma Fish wick bring their unique experience creating dynamic designs for some of Australia’s most innovative theatre companies.

From the team that brought you Perth Festival Sensation Whale Fall, Nocturna is a devious, dark comedy that celebrates the idiosyncrasies of household politics, hidden desires, undying love and trying to land on your feet.

The calibre of the team, the ambitious nature of the content and the bold quality of the work promise a rich and unique experience for Perth audiences and an exciting contribution to the national theatre landscape.

Director Mel Cantwell Said:

The journey of the work is that most special of experiences: surprising and confounding, it leads us on a unique and exhilarating path toward understanding one another and the vastness of the worlds we inhabit.

Exploring Nocturna with this incredible cast and creative team is the realisation of a long held love for this work. I can’t wait to get into the theatre and take audiences on this most unpredictable of theatrical rides.
