New Theatre and New Season for WA

 Next week, the premiere season for Perth’s newest theatre will commence in Northbridge. 

 Next week, the premiere season for Perth’s newest theatre will commence in Northbridge.  The new Metcalfe Playhouse now stands in the place of the old IMAX cinema on Lake Street and is named for WA-based stage veteran and long time artistic director of the old Playhouse Theatre, Edgar Metcalfe. Edgar Metcalfe told the West Australian recently that he felt humbled to be honoured in this fashion. “All I have done in my entire career is what I have been paid to do and what I have learned to do,” Metcalfe said. “If I have done it well then that is great. I don’t expect to be thanked extra.”    With 280 seats and an intimate feel, the Metcalfe Playhouse is set to avail itself as an affordable venue for theatre productions which cannot fill or are not suited to the likes of the Burswood Theatre and His Majesty’s Theatre. At 2300 seats, the Burswood Theatre capacity is nearly ten times that of the new Metcalfe Playhouse and His Majesty’s Theatre seats 1200.  The first show in the new theatre was Her Holiness – a play about Mary McKillop – which opened in April this year. However, the official season for 2011 begins on July 22 with a world premiere production of When Dad Married Fury, written by acclaimed Australian playwright, David Williamson. The show stars the theatre’s namesake himself, Edgar Metcalfe, Alinta Carroll, Richard Mellick and Jay Walsh.  Also in this year’s season:
