Neil LaBute’s Reasons to be Pretty makes its Australian debut

Neil LaBute’s Tony Award nominated play Reasons to be Prettyis set to make its Australian premiere at Darlinghurst Theatre next month.

Reasons to be Pretty is the third play in a thematic trilogy by LaBute that’s concerned with society’s obsession with looks. Following Sydney successes The Shape of Things and Fat Pig (both STC productions) this third and arguably most relatable work is finally being staged for Australian audiences.

This one is the story of Greg and Stephanie. They’ve been together for a while when Greg says something a little bit stupid about Stephanie that pushes her to the very edge. These are familiar struggles: wanting to be loved, wanting to feel attractive, and wanting to understand each other. It’s also a searing-hot comedy.

Co-produced by Andrew Henry (returning to Australia after studying with the acclaimed Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago) who is part of the cast and James Beach (The Very Dangerous Variety Hour), who directs, the rest of the lineup is no less impressive. The cast also includes Julia Grace (Tribes), Stephen James King (The Great Gatsby) and Lucy Maunder (Doctor Zhivago).

LaBute’s trademark frank, pull-no-punches writing makes this an ideal play for anyone who has ever felt ugly, wanted revenge, or written a secret letter to an ex.
