MTC – My Sister Jill premieres this week

Patricia Cornelius’ My Sister Jill makes its world premiere tomorrow, Thursday 28 September, at Melbourne Theatre Company’s Southbank Theatre.

Australia’s fiercest theatre-making duo – writer Patricia Cornelius and director Susie Dee – reignite their long- time collaboration for My Sister Jill, with a thought-provoking and emotionally charged family drama that elegantly captures the spirit and struggle of a post-war generation in 1960s suburban Australia.

Adapted for the stage from her own novel, Cornelius’s My Sister Jill will be the second of her plays presented by state theatre companies this year – with Do Not Go Gentle having played to five-star critical acclaim at Sydney Theatre Company in May.

Bringing to life this universal tale of the Australian spirit on stage is Ian Bliss (Jasper Jones), Maude
Davey (The Heartbreak Choir), Lucy Goleby (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), Benjamin Nichol (Sirens), James O’Connell (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), Zachary Pidd (School Of Rock The Musical) and Angourie Rice (Mare of Easttown).

The youngest in the family, Christine (Angourie Rice) idolises her father, especially his stories of wartime
heroics. Her sister Jill (Lucy Goleby), meanwhile, doesn’t quite share the same sentiments. As the intensity of the Vietnam War looms, the stories slowly start to lose their shine and war threatens to break a new generation apart.

For nearly 40 years Cornelius and Dee have crafted urgent and vital award-winning theatre that champions Australia’s working class. In 2019 they became the first Australians programmed in the Venice Biennale’s theatre program with their acclaimed productions SHIT and Love.

My Sister Jill is proudly commissioned by Melbourne Theatre Company’s industry-leading NEXT STAGE Writers’ Program, supporting artists over multi-year engagements to develop new work.

My Sister Jill is now playing at the Southbank Theatre until 28 October.
