MTC Farewells Associate Director Leticia Cáceres

Melbourne Theatre Company announced on Thursday that Leticia Cáceres, Associate Director for the company, will leave her position at the closing of her contract in December.

Leticia Cáceres

Of her decision, Cáceres said, ‘I’m very proud of my achievements during my time at MTC but the moment has come to explore new opportunities. My tenure has been nothing short of extraordinary and I feel very fortunate to have been able to shape and support the programs and initiatives offered under Brett [Sheehy’s] vision for the Company. I’d like to thank everyone for providing such a supportive and inspiring place to create theatre. I will miss my MTC family but am very much looking forward to presenting upcoming productions for MTC on both the Mainstage and through the Families and Education Program in 2016.’

An accomplished director with the company, the core values for each show Cáceres has worked on has met with the MTC’s vision of attracting new and younger audiences with fresh, bold and contemporary theatre.

A press release from the MTC outlined Cáceres contributions to the company as the following:

“Her production of Cock attracted high numbers of audiences under thirty years old and her commitment to young audiences remained a hallmark of her time with MTC, with her production of Yellow Moon touring to regional schools, receiving four Green Room Award nominations and winning a Drama Victoria Award. In total, Leticia’s productions reached well over 80,000 attendances and her productions of Cock and Death and the Maiden both toured interstate. Leticia also led MTC’s landmark Women Directors Program for the past two years, which has seen twenty-three women directors forge relationships with MTC and establish work opportunities for new and diverse voices on the Mainstage.”

Cáceres remains engaged to direct the Australian premiere of The Distance and the world premiere of Egg for MTC in 2016 as planned, however, due to unforeseen conflicts in schedules, she has had to withdraw from directing Straight White Men. Sarah Giles will now step into the vacated role.

MTC will be advertising to appoint new members of its artistic team, with more information to be made available shortly.
