Your Sunday Afternoon Zen: Mitchell Butel sings “One for my Baby”

It’s the end of the weekend already? It goes by far too quickly. But don’t worry, Sunday afternoon means one last moment of pleasure by way of a gorgeous local voice taking us to a place that isn’t, you know, Sunday afternoon with the promise of another difficult week looming ahead.

Mitchell Butel.
Mitchell Butel.

Today, let’s turn our thoughts to Mitchell Butel, an accomplished actor and singer who has been awarded three Helpmann Awards for Best Actor in a Musical for The Mikado, Avenue Q, and The Venetian Twins, and was nominated for Little Me, Summer Rain, and The Republic of Myopia.

His cabaret Killing Time (he has an album of the same name) explores the concept of time and how it informs a life. When it played Sydney’s Hayes Theatre in November last year, I wrote that he possessed a “careless cool that can feel suave, or hesitant, or dismissive, depending on the moment.”

The cabaret is coming back to the Hayes as part of its 2015 Cabaret Festival in June – after this video, you might just end up grabbing a ticket.

Butel is endlessly charming, and you can experience that here, as he sings “One for my Baby.”

Happy Sunday!
