Fresh from its breathtaking international tour to North America, the UK, and Europe, Circa, one of the world’s leading contemporary circus companies, joins forces with Merrigong Theatre Company to soar onto the Wollongong stage with Duck Pond a mind-blowing reimagining of the world’s most romantic ballet, Swan Lake, at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre from 22nd to 25th October.
In an unforgettable “collision of ballet and circus” (ArtsHub), audiences will be swept away by this tale of swans and hapless princes, sparkling with quirky touches like the sequined flipper-wearing duck army and a burlesque black swan. There are sumptuous aerials, jaw-dropping acrobatics, and of course feathers!
Circa’s Artistic Director and Director & Creator of Duck Pond, Yaron Lifschitz:
I wanted to make something beautiful, funny, sophisticated and accessible; a kind of mythical unicorn that reaches across ages and artistic preferences. I chose Swan Lake as the basis because it has everything – good and evil, black and white, and of course a lot of tutus.
With ten-strong cast from the award-winning Circa ensemble, Duck Pond is one of Circa’s most ambitious works, with costume design by Libby McDonnell, music by Jethro Woodward (with hints of Tchaikovsky), and lighting from Alexander Berlage.
Touching, funny and utterly entertaining, Duck Pond pushes the limits of the art-form with jaw -dropping acrobatics that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
