Melbourne Producers StageArt will not be continue in 2019

Melbourne independent musical theatre producers StageArt have announced that they will not be continuing into 2019, with the current production of Nine the Musical being the last for the company.

StageArt Executive Producers, Katherine Armstrong and Robbie Carmellotti

Executive producers Katherine Armstrong and Robbie Carmellotti

took to Facebook to announce the news. “It has been a difficult decision to make as we reflect upon the past seven years which has seen us boldly stage productions which many said could never be done, while fighting hard for equality in casting and creative endeavours. The time has come where we can no longer keep up with the ever increasing costs and demands associated with running a viable independent theatre company, in its current incarnation”

StageArt began in 2011 at Gasworks in South Melbourne, but is best known as a regular at Chapel off Chapel. The company blossomed into one of the most prolific producers of independent musical theatre in Melbourne with 31 productions in 7 years, including Spring Awakening, Memphis, Titanic The Musical, The Colour Purple, Saturday Night Fever and their current production of Nine the Musical.

‘Titanic’- StageArt

The company fostered young talent and many StageArt alumni are excelling in major Australian productions, including: Gareth Jacobs (Genie – Aladdin), Jayme-Lee Hanekom (Violet – Charlie & The Chocolate Factory), Augie Tchantcho (General – The Book Of Mormon), Adam Di Martino (Omar – Aladdin), Iopu Auva’a (Harry Potter & The Cursed Child) and Jake Fehily (Augustus Gloop – Charlie & The Chocolate Factory) just to name a few.

While they are closing their doors for now, the producers have said they will “continue to assess future possibilities”. We are sure that we will see them back somewhere around the industry in the near future.

Nine The Musical,
StageArt’s final production, currently playing at Chapel Off Chapel until November 3.
