Several London theatres have cancelled performances in reaction to the riots which have been taking place across the city.
The Union Theatre posted on its twitter feed: “Having to cancel tonight’s show, can’t risk anyone’s safety. Boarding up buildings around us. Feel gutted and sad and a bit scared too.” The Theatres Trust twitter feed has listed a number of theatres which are closing as a precaution, including: Battersea Arts Centre, the Churchill Theatre (Bromley), The Albany (Deptford), The Landor Theatre, The Gatehouse London, The Courthouse Theatre, Greenwich Playhouse, The Space Arts Centre. AussieTheatre.com understands that the Albany Theatre in Deptford suffered some damage during a riot, however no one was injured. Their twitter feed states that the theatre is ‘battered and bruised’. “Our front doors got the brunt of it”, @TheAlbanySE8 tweeted. While no West End Theatres have closed their doors, concerns are still mounting regarding the safety of workers and patrons in London.
Anyone holding a ticket for performances in London have been advised to check with venue box offices before travelling.
