JOSEPHINE WANTS TO DANCE Pirouettes into the Geelong Arts Centre

JOSEPHINE WANTS TO DANCE, the beloved children’s tale from Jackie French (of DIARY OF A WOMBAT fame) and illustrator Bruce Whatley is pirouetting onto the stage at Geelong Arts Centre these school holidays. Brought to life by the award-winning Monkey Baa Theatre Company, the production enchants young audiences with a lively mix of ballet, hip-hop, and a whole lot of kangaroo-sized determination.

Inspired by the classic picture book, JOSEPHINE WANTS TO DANCE follows the adventures of an inquisitive kangaroo named Josephine. Despite her brother Joey’s scepticism, Josephine hops away from her quiet bush home, determined to experience the bright lights of the city and realise her dream of dancing in the spotlight. Along the way, she finds herself both awed and enticed by a local production of Swan Lake—and decides she simply must join in. What follows is a delightful musical journey that celebrates the power of persistence, the thrill of performance, and the importance of believing in yourself.

Adapted by Eva Di Cesare, Sandie Eldridge, and Tim McGarry, the same creative team who reimagined the iconic POSSUM MAGIC for the stage, this show has been enthralling families right across Australia. Full of toe-tapping tunes, joyful choreography, and whimsical stagecraft, JOSEPHINE WANTS TO DANCE offers a heartfelt message about chasing your dreams—no matter where (or who) you are.

Parents and carers, mark your calendars for 16–17 April 2025: four performances will be staged at 10:00am and 1:00pm at Geelong Arts Centre’s The Story House. For inclusive access, the 1:00pm show on Wednesday 16 April will be Auslan Interpreted, ensuring a warm welcome for all theatre-goers.

Don’t miss your chance to see Josephine leap, twirl, and hip-hop her way into the spotlight. Whether you’re a budding ballet devotee or simply looking for a fun-filled family outing, JOSEPHINE WANTS TO DANCE promises to inspire, entertain, and remind us all that with a little courage and a lot of practice, anyone can make their dreams take flight.
