Jonathan Bailey Reveals ‘Wicked: For Good’ Will Showcase Original Content Not Seen on Stage

Fans of the Broadway sensation Wicked have reason to rejoice, as Jonathan Bailey recently revealed that the upcoming film Wicked: For Good will introduce brand-new content beyond what’s featured in the iconic stage musical.

Scheduled for release on 21 November, Wicked: For Good concludes the cinematic two-part adaptation of the beloved Broadway phenomenon. The film explores Act Two of the musical, following Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, portrayed by Ariana Grande, as they navigate the intense fallout from their previous choices.

Elphaba, now labeled the infamous “Wicked Witch of the West,” battles isolation and prejudice in her pursuit to expose the Wizard’s deceit and liberate the oppressed animals of Oz. Glinda, on the other hand, thrives as the adored face of goodness in Oz, becoming a celebrated figurehead while preparing for her extravagant wedding to Prince Fiyero, portrayed by Bailey himself. Yet beneath her glamorous façade lies emotional turmoil over her fractured friendship with Elphaba.

In addition to closely following the musical’s established narrative, the movie promises to delve deeper into its characters’ emotional landscapes and backstories. Bailey noted that while theatre audiences accept simplified staging—such as Elphaba’s vague hideaway—film viewers will experience visually immersive settings crafted meticulously for realism and emotional depth.

Notably, both Erivo and Grande have revealed that their characters will debut original solo songs, enhancing their arcs in ways previously unseen. Erivo collaborated directly with legendary composer Stephen Schwartz on a deeply emotional track for Elphaba, one she hints moved the film crew to tears during production. Grande also teased a new musical number for Glinda, offering fans an intimate look at the defining moment shaping her character’s identity—a transformation traditionally occurring offstage.

These revelations suggest the film will not simply translate the stage musical directly onto the screen, but instead offer audiences a richer, more nuanced portrayal of its central figures. With the promise of expanded storytelling, new music, and cinematic scope, Wicked: For Good appears set to captivate longtime fans and newcomers alike, adding fresh emotional resonance to a modern classic.
