Hot Shoe Shuffle opens tonight at QPAC in Brisbane, celebrating its 21st Birthday!
Who can believe it is over twenty years since this lively show first wowed audiences around the world?
As a home grown musical it was the first show of its kind to succeed both at home and internationally. For the lovers of big band hits of the 1940s and energetic and exciting tap routines, Hot Shoe Shuffle fits the bill. It is one of the longest running musicals ever to be produced in Australia.
David Atkins never ceases to amaze audiences with both his vitality and brilliance as he both co-choreographs, produces, directs and acts in this latest masterpiece. Dein Perry is now on the “hot list” of choreographers for his mastery alongside the great Mr Atkins.
Since the shows creation in 1992, Hot Shoe Shuffle has played to sell-out crowds in many countries (including Australia). Last time the show played to Australian audiences was in 2002 where the show was staged in thirty-three cities and continued to entertain for a total of seven months. There have also been three television shows based on the successful production.
Now it is Brisbane’s turn once again to start toe tappin’. Atkins leads a dynamic and individually acclaimed team beginning with none other than the amazing Max Lambert instrumental in the Musical Direction of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Having had the privilege of tutorage from Mr Lambert, I am so very excited to see this latest offering of the much loved musical. With an artistic team such as Drew Anthony , David Stratton, Eamon D’Arcy and Michael Waters , costume designs from Janet Hine and writing by Larry Buttrose , Brisbane audiences will be tempted to leap into the isles to the beat of such great songs as ‘Puttin On The Ritz’ and ‘How Lucky Can You Get’.
Get out your dancing shoes Brisbane as there is sure to be an increase in tap classes once we are lured into the past of 40’s musical passion.
In the words of the London Standard “It is faultless footwork , their flying feet set the stage alight – This Tap is Hot”.
Hot Shoe Shuffle will play until 25 May at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC
