La Traviata: Glamour, riches and a tragic secret in ‘triumphant’ new production

This “triumphant” (Sydney Morning Herald) new staging of Verdi’s most famous opera, La Traviata will have its Melbourne premiere at the Regent Theatre on 8 May. The lauded production by Director Sarah Giles brings Violetta’s inner world to the fore in an acclaimed, luscious staging that delves into the heartache behind the glamour.

Melbourne born soprano Stacey Alleaume and Italian Maria Laura Iacobellis offer distinctive interpretations of Violetta while rising star Filipe Manu makes his role debut as Alfredo. Under conductor Giampaolo Bisanti Orchestra Victoria, the Opera Australia Chorus and superb cast will draw audiences into Verdi’s masterpiece, his music as thrilling and emotional as it has ever been.

Starring some of the country’s finest singers, the Opera Australia Chorus and Orchestra Victoria, this milestone one-off concert exclusive to Melbourne will bring to life a program of thrilling operatic highlights from the company’s diverse performing history.

Now recognised as the country’s largest performing arts company, Opera Australia was formed when a band of everyday Australians – butchers, pharmacists and newsagents – united to celebrate the 1956 Mozart bicentenary with a touring season of the composer’s The Magic Flute, Così fan tutte, The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni.

Mischievous humour meets soaring melodies in a sparkling evening of operatic wit, whimsy and unforgettable song when Opera Australia presents Gilbert & Sullivan: A Musical Celebration in three Melbourne exclusive concerts at the Regent Theatre.

Ben Mingay and Antoinette Halloran will reunite, joining an all-star cast from Opera Australia to delight audiences with highlights from The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S Pinafore and Iolanthe. Directed by Gilbert and Sullivan aficionado, Stuart Maunder AM, who has thoughtfully linked together some of their most loved tunes with dialogue from the works and musings from Gilbert and Sullivan themselves.

Musical theatre royalty Caroline O’Connor will perform alongside some of Australia’s most exciting musical theatre stars in a landmark concert Encore! Songs from the Musicals, singing show-stopping hits at the Regent Theatre from 28-30 May.

Joining O’Conner is a brilliant cast of Aussie musical theatre stars; Abigail Adriano, Jarrod Draper, Nigel Huckle, Ashleigh Rubenach and Raphael Wong. Audiences will revisit some of the most iconic musical moments, played gloriously by the magnificent Orchestra Victoria, including The Phantom of the Opera, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, West Side Story, Miss Saigon, Evita, Sunset Boulevard, A Little Night Music, Guys & Dolls and more.
