Gold Coast production of Mamma Mia to be postponed

Matt Ward Entertainment (MWE) has today announced it will postpone the July production of MAMMA MIA! at The Star Gold Coast, in light of the rapidly evolving COVID-19 outbreak.

With a new date to be confirmed toward the end of the year, the decision did not come lightly for the independent production company, with the reality and impact on the arts and entertainment industry hard-hitting.

“We’ve been placed in an unprecedented situation that requires enforced measures to ensure the health and wellbeing of our artists, audiences and creative team,” said Matt.

“In line with government advice and enforced restrictions, along with information from Live Performance Australia and Music Theatre International, and in concert with other major productions nation-wide, we have made the hard decision to postpone.”

MWE is currently in talks with venue The Star Gold Coast, around new dates later this year to bring the Broadway smash-hit musical to Gold Coast audiences.

“We want to assure ticket holders and our incredible production team, that it’s not a matter of if, it’s when we will be announcing that MAMMA MIA! will be back and ready to get the Gold Coast dancing after what has been an unprecedented and difficult time for all of us.”

He added that while those who have pre-bought tickets are entitled to a full refund through Ticketek it was imperative, where possible, to keep supporting the Arts and artists and encouraged people to wait for the new dates.

“Our industry is facing huge impacts during this difficult time, but we wish to ensure the community that we have every intent to bring MAMMA MIA! to the Gold Coast and are working closely with The Star Gold Coast to secure dates for later in the year.”

With the production still on the horizon, MWE’s recent announcement of its star search with media partner 102.9 Hot Tomato to find a budding Gold Coast local to play the lead role of ‘Sophie Sheridan’ in the production, will remain open.

“We are committed to local talent and finding our star to appear in the MAMMA MIA! season and have made the decision alongside Hot Tomato to keep entries open so applicants can enter by submitting a video to www.mygc.com.au from the comfort of their own home.”

The application process will remain open indefinitely, until the homegrown production can reschedule and announce a new date.

Current ticket holders for the previously scheduled season from July 4 to 26, can be assured that their tickets will remain valid for the new production dates, with refunds offered by Ticketek should ticket holders not be able to attend the new dates.
