Glen Street Theatre’s 2014 Season – Our picks

The team at Glen Street Theatre have announced their plans for 2014 and the upcoming season will be especially exciting, as the theatre will re-open for business following extensive renovations.

Mayor of Warringah, Michael Regan said, “2014 is going to be a memorable year in Glen Street history – when we see the opening of our refurbished foyer, the beginning of work on our new Cultural Hub and a wonderful season of productions from stages all over Australia.”

ADMISSION: ONE SHILLING (May)

“The Bucket residence, the lady of the house speaking.” If you heard that line in your head, you heard it recited by formidable British actress Patricia Routledge, and she stars in this Nigel Hess play which is touring from the UK in May. It’s the story of the lunchtime concerts staged by legendary British pianist Myra Hess in the National Gallery in London throughout the Second World War, and features performances by internationally renowned pianist Piers Lane.

THE REMOVALISTS (August)

Australia’s prolific playwright is almost at saturation point in 2014, with several productions popping up in most major theatre seasons, but The Removalists is notable, widely considered as one of Williamson’s most important plays. Its portrayal of Australian suburbia rings as true now as it did in the 1970s, and if you haven’t seen it staged yet, there’s no time like the present to brush up on your Williamson.

HOPELESSLY DEVOTED (August)

A musical by Elise Greig with contributions from Nick Backstrom, this musical is billed as doing for Olivia Newton-John what Mamma Mia did for ABBA. A two-hander, this is about a brother and sister, Amy and Andy, who are stuck caring for their chronically ill mother. To escape reality, Amy creates a fantasy world in their lounge room. Curtain up, cue the ONJ.

OUR GLAD: MEMORIES OF GLADYS MONCRIEFF (June)

What Joan Sutherland was to grand opera, Gladys Moncrieff was to the golden age of operetta and musical comedy. Starring Christine Douglas and accompanied by pianist extraordinaire and comic genius Glenn Amer, this concert is a musical pavlova of delicious melodies and nostalgia.

JUDY: A LIFE IN SONG (October)

Judy Garland is one of the modern world’s most enduring and beloved figures. Starring Melanie Parry and set against film footage of Judy Garland, this intimate show tells of her triumphs and tragedies as a little girl at MGM to her television shows and concerts, whilst masterfully recreating many of Judy’s famous numbers.

Glen Street Theatre is located at the corner Glen Street and Blackbutts Road, Belrose. For bookings, or information on the whole 2014 season, visit  www.glenstreet.com.au.
