A thrilling production of Gluck’s Orpheus & Eurydice will stun audiences in Melbourne from 2-5 December, when the acclaimed production arrives at the Regent Theatre following critical acclaim and sold-out shows at Edinburgh International Festival earlier this year.
Opera Australia and Edinburgh International Festival present Opera Queensland’s five star production in association with Circa. In a feat of virtuosity, awe-inspiring acrobatics and sublime music create an other-worldly telling of the famous Greek myth, recently popularised by hit musical Hadestown.
Fresh from a celebrated run in Edinburgh, Australian soprano Samantha Clarke and British countertenor Iestyn Davies will once again join forces with the brilliant performers of Circa in an evening of contemporary circus and opera that promises audible gasps from the audience.
Both the Amore and Eurydice roles are sung by Clarke, who is quickly establishing herself as one of the world’s most exciting singers, with Davies singing Orfeo.
A countertenor voice is the highest male voice in opera, known for its distinctive, ethereal sound and Davies is widely regarded as one of the world’s best.
Circa is known internationally for its unique productions and excellence in storytelling by some of the best circus-performing talent in the country. Notably, this production features four graduates of Melbourne’s National Institute of Circus Arts, including Lachlan Suckroo, Rosa Mordaunt, Zachary Stephens and Billie Wilson Coffey.
Orpheus & Eurydice will be conducted by Australian Dane Lam, leading Orchestra Victoria and the world-renowned Opera Australia Chorus in this powerful production. Filled with vocal and physical acrobatics, Director and Set Designer Yaron Lifschitz has created a visually stunning, genre-busting display of brilliance.
