Following smash-hit seasons at Adelaide Fringe, Perth Fringe World, and a triumphant win at the 2024 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Classic Penguins by comic powerhouse Garry Starr is heading to Sydney from 3 September to 12 October playing exclusively at The Grand Electric – a venue now firmly established as one of the city’s hottest comedy nightspots.
Currently preparing for seasons in London and the Edinburgh Fringe, Garry Starr (the brilliantly absurd alter ego of silly billy Damien Warren-Smith) is on a noble, if not entirely clothed, mission: to save literature by performing every Penguin Classic novel ever written — in just one hour.
Yes, it’s literary chaos, delivered mostly naked (except for a pair of flippers), and fuelled by Starr’s signature blend of theatrical madness and masterful parody.
Damien Warren-Smith:
I’m so excited to be bringing this brand-new version of Classic Penguins EXCLUSIVELY to The Grand Electric for 6 weeks only. If you like your comedy idiotic, naked and incredibly highbrow, this is the show for you.
Audiences and critics alike have embraced the lunacy:
Brilliantly ticklish… joyfully silly” — ★★★★★ The Guardian
Flawless and unmissable” — ★★★★★ ArtsHub
Debauchery at its most linguistic level, with a penchant for occasional levels of genius — ★★★★★Theatre Thoughts
From The Little Prince to Moby Dick and beyond, no work of fiction is safe in this riotous, quick-change, one-man extravaganza that lampoons the literary canon with unbridled joy and a touch of utter nincompoopery.
