FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is set to tour Australia

Following record breaking, sold out seasons in London and across the UK, the critically acclaimed revival of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is set to tour Australia in 2026, with its inaugural Australian premiere season opening at Theatre Royal Sydney from July 2026, before touring nationally to Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

Direct from a sold out season at London’s Barbican Theatre, where it became the best selling musical in the venue’s history. The production has captivated audiences and critics alike, earning standing ovations across the UK, a wave of five star reviews, and three Olivier Awards, including the coveted Best Musical Revival.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest musicals ever written, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF features one of musical theatre’s most beloved and enduring scores. Songs such as If I Were A Rich Man, Tradition, Matchmaker and Sunrise, Sunset have become woven into popular culture, their melodies and lyrics resonating far beyond the stage. At its heart, the musical is a joyful yet deeply moving celebration of love, family, faith and community, balancing humour and warmth with moments of profound emotional weight.

The story is set in 1905 in the tiny village of Anatevka, where Tevye, a humble milkman, lives his life guided by long held traditions. These customs provide structure, comfort and identity for the community, but they are increasingly tested as the world around them begins to change. For Tevye’s five daughters, tradition means arranged marriages and the guiding hand of the matchmaker. As each daughter begins to challenge his expectations and assert her own desires, Tevye is forced to confront the limits of his beliefs. Against a backdrop of political unrest and social upheaval, he must decide whether to cling to the past or learn to embrace an unfamiliar future.

This latest revival has been brought powerfully to life by visionary and award winning director Jordan Fein, whose bold contemporary interpretation has been praised for its emotional clarity, inventive staging and striking theatrical detail. Fein’s approach honours the musical’s rich history while allowing it to speak directly to modern audiences, finding new relevance in its themes of displacement, identity and generational change.

Under Fein’s direction, the production has become one of the most talked about musical theatre events on London’s West End in recent years. Following a triumphant, sold out run at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2024, the production transferred to the Barbican Theatre for a strictly limited season. Demand was immediate and overwhelming, with the show smashing box office records and cementing its status as a must see event.

The success did not stop there. The production went on to tour extensively across the UK and Ireland, continuing to break box office records and playing to full houses nationwide. Its reception confirmed that this revival was not only a critical success but also a powerful connection point for audiences seeking theatre that speaks to both tradition and change.

Producer Howard Panter said the decision to bring the production to Australia was an easy one.

This incredible production immediately blew me away, Panter said. I’m delighted, with our partners, to bring this masterpiece to Australian audiences for what will be one of the major cultural highlights of the year.

James Pidgeon, Executive Director of Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, also welcomed the Australian tour, noting the strong relationship audiences have already formed with the theatre’s work. Following the success of the Australian tour of Jesus Christ Superstar in 2024 and 2025, Pidgeon said he was thrilled that audiences across Australia would now have the opportunity to experience this Olivier Award winning production of Fiddler on the Roof.

For Theatre Royal Sydney, the timing of the production’s arrival is especially significant. General Manager Houri Tapikisaid 2026 marks a milestone year for the venue as it celebrates its 50th anniversary and looks ahead to the next 50 years with Trafalgar Entertainment continuing to operate the theatre. Hosting Fiddler on the Roof during this anniversary year, Tapiki said, felt like a fitting way to honour the theatre’s legacy while embracing its future.

Further details for the Melbourne and Perth seasons, along with casting announcements, are yet to be revealed. With its record breaking history, acclaimed creative vision and timeless story, this revival of Fiddler on the Roof is poised to be one of the most anticipated musical theatre events to tour Australia in 2026.
