Feather blizzard hits Perth as Place Des Anges opens the 60th Perth International Arts Festival

Last night I did something I haven’t done in a very long time: I braved the Perth crowds and ventured into St George’s Terrace to experience the once in a lifetime event Place Des Anges, the opening act to the 60th Perth International Arts Festival performed by Les Studio de Cirque from France.

(In order to fully appreciate this spectacle you need to know it is being performed some thirty six storeys above the Perth CBD).

As the Perth Town Hall clock chimed 8:00pm performers were gliding into position to begin the 40 minute aerial show. Mother nature assisted in the effects as the opening angel flew out to the back drop of clouds.  Angels flew from corners of buildings, circling and dancing above the crowd as an ever increasing fall of feathers was released from the skies. At times the crowd cheered with delight and at one point laughter, as two pillow fighting angels soared above. The most photographed performer of the evening was the giant inflatable angel, which floated up and down the Terrace. By the finale Perth’s CBD and surrounds was covered in a blizzard of feathers.

I’m sure this production will be remembered in centuries to come, as a Perth skyscraper is imploded and a single feather rises from the debris as a reminder of the night in 2012 when Place Des Anges performed in Perth.

Perth International Arts Festival will run until March 3, 2012.
