Fancy dress is about to get a whole lot fancier

Opera Australia’s costume and prop clearance sale. Crazy outfits at crazy prices!

During the coronavirus shut down, Opera Australia was busy taking stock and today announced it is clearing thousands of old costumes and props from retired productions that will no longer be used. These items will be put on sale to the public with prices starting as low as $2.

The sale will take place at OA’s storehouse in Alexandria, which the Company recently announced was being put up for sale due to the impact of the pandemic. So all stock must go.

The COVID-safe sale will run over two weekends with pre-booked hourly sessions to ensure no overcrowding. Stock will be continually replenished with more than 5,000 costumes and props looking for new homes. Customers may only purchase up to 15 costumes and 5 props each.

Many of the quirky costumes have been made by hand in OA’s wardrobe department. It’s a great opportunity to bolster the fancy dress collection, with items ranging from military-style coats, handcrafted period gowns, animal costumes, hats and some rather risqué bondage pieces.

The props for sale range from the sublime to the ridiculous. There are aeroplane seats, a life-sized prop horse and a vintage army bed. Paintings, cupid sculptures, daybeds, a chaise lounge and a variety of tables also available.

Large prop items can’t be taken on the day and must be booked in for collection the following week.

Customers must register their attendance by booking online for one of the 60-minute sessions. This is a free, ticketed event and bookings are essential.

Covid-19 Safety Measures: This is a COVID-safe event. Visitors are advised to not attend if unwell.

  • Online booking is required to ensure maximum capacity of 60 people per 60min session
  • Temperature check at the entry point
  • Customers are encouraged to wear a mask
  • No dressing rooms will be available to try on items
  • Surfaces will be wiped down and sanitised after each session
  • Contactless card payment is advised

Dates: Friday 13 – Saturday 14 November Friday 27 – Saturday 28 November
Session Times: 9:00am | 10:30am | 12:00pm | 1:30pm | 3:00pm
